Prepress Artwork Checklist

Ensure your artwork is professionally prepared for print.

Use our prepress checklist to avoid delays, maintain quality, and streamline production. Properly prepared files result in faster turnaround and flawless print outcomes.

01. Accepted File Formats

  • Supply artwork as press-ready PDF files (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 preferred).

  • All files must be high resolution with crop marks and 3mm bleed.

02. Page Size and Setup

  • Ensure the document size matches the final trim size.

  • Set artwork in CMYK colour mode (not RGB).

  • Supply single pages in correct order (not spreads).

03. Bleed and Safe Zones

  • Include minimum 3mm bleed on all sides of each page.

  • Keep key text and design elements 5mm inside the trim area to avoid trimming issues.

04. Image Quality

  • All images must be at 300dpi at actual size.

  • Avoid low-resolution or web-sourced graphics, which may print blurry.

05. Colour Management

  • Convert all colours to CMYK unless spot colours are required.

  • Clearly specify any Pantone (PMS) colours used in the artwork.

  • Use rich black (e.g. C30 M30 Y30 K100) for large areas of solid black.

06. Fonts and Text

  • Convert all fonts to outlines or ensure they are fully embedded.

  • Perform a final check for spelling, alignment, and kerning.

07. Transparencies and Layers

  • Flatten all transparencies to avoid rendering issues.

  • Remove unused layers, hidden elements, and non-printing items.

08. Trim Marks and Overprint Settings

  • Include trim marks aligned to the trim box.

  • Carefully manage overprint settings, especially for black and spot colours.

09. Proofing

  • Prior to submission review your final PDF file.

  • Request a hard copy or digital proof if colour accuracy is critical.
