PDF Specifications for Print-Ready Artwork
Prepare your print-ready PDF according to industry best practices
Submitting your files correctly is essential to ensure a smooth print process and professional-quality results.
01. File Format
-
Export files as PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-4 for maximum compatibility and reliability.
-
Ensure the file is press-ready, with all fonts embedded or outlined and no editing restrictions.
02. Bleed and Crop Marks
-
Include a minimum of 3mm bleed on all sides of your artwork.
-
Add crop marks to indicate the final trim size.
-
Keep important text and logos at least 5mm inside the trim edge.
03. Colour Mode
-
Convert all colours to CMYK before exporting your PDF.
-
Avoid RGB, as colours may shift during print.
-
Use PMS spot colours only if specified and required.
-
For solid black areas, use rich black (e.g. C30 M30 Y30 K100).
04. Image Resolution
-
All images and graphics must be at 300dpi at final print size.
-
Do not upscale low-resolution images, as this can result in poor quality.
-
Avoid using images from websites or screenshots.
05. Fonts and Typography
-
Outline all fonts or ensure they are fully embedded in the PDF.
-
Check for typographic issues such as incorrect spacing, alignment, and font substitutions.
-
Perform a final proofread for spelling and grammatical errors.
06. Transparency and Layers
-
Flatten all transparencies during export to prevent output issues on press.
-
Delete any hidden layers, unused elements, or comments/annotations.
07. Overprint Settings
-
Carefully check overprint and knockout settings - especially for black text and spot colours.
-
Incorrect overprint settings can cause elements to disappear in print.
08. Page Size and Layout
-
Match your document size to the intended trim size.
-
Supply single pages in reading order (not printer spreads), unless otherwise requested.
-
Ensure artwork is centred on the page and aligned consistently.
